Wizards Presents: The Next Year of Magic and DnD

For the first time, Wizards of the Coast released a “Wizards Presents” video, detailing the next year’s worth of products for both Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Fans of both series have plenty to look forward to in the coming months, so let’s dive right into all the exciting announcements!

Wizards Presents – DnD

Wizards Presents gave us the biggest news in DnD since the release of 5e. There are plenty of exciting products for adventurers both new and old, including the next evolution of Dungeons and Dragons.

One DnD

The biggest piece of DnD news from today’s presentation was the announcement of “One DnD,” which refers to WOTC’s efforts to update the strong foundation of 5e. There are three core goals to One DnD:

  • Updating the rules of 5e and releasing new core rulebooks
  • Expanding DnD Beyond
  • Introducing the DnD Digital Play Experience

WOTC was very clear that the new rules will be backwards compatible with the old books. Their intention isn’t to create a new edition or make the current 5e books obsolete. Instead, they want to improve the game in ways that reflect player feedback. To this end, there will be monthly playtesting materials available on Unearthed Arcana for players to try out and give their feedback on.

They’ll also be working on a digital interface to play Dungeons and Dragons using the Unreal Engine. It will feature both premade adventures and tools for creating your own campaigns.

Anniversary of Legend of Drizzt

2023 is the 35th anniversary of the famous DnD book series by R.A. Salvatore: The Legend of Drizzt. To celebrate, WOTC will be releasing tons of content relating to the series.

First, the entire series will be available as both physical books and ebooks with brand new covers. WOTC will also release a “Visual Dictionary,” which will take readers through the world of the Forgotten Realms with never-before seen art. It will explore the lore, characters, and locations of the series in stunning new detail.

A new webcomic following the story of Brie-Zara, the daughter of Drizzt and Catti-brie, will also be featured on WEBTOON. It’s been written by Purpah, the author of the webcomic Suitor Armor, with guidance from R.A. Salvatore.

Dragonlance

DnD has already released 5e content for many iconic settings, such as Eberron and Spelljammer, and the world of Dragonlance is the next to receive its own official sourcebook! Shadow of the Dragon Queen will take adventurers to the early days of the War of the Lance. This campaign tells a brand new story focusing on joining the war effort, inspired by WWI and WWII.

A cooperative board game, Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn, will release alongside the new source material. Both the board game and the campaign book can be enjoyed separately, but players using Shadow of the Dragon Queen can use Warriors of Krynn to simulate large-scale battles in their own campaign.

This new wave of Dragonlance products will release on Dec. 6th, but you can get them through early access on DnD Beyond starting on Nov. 22nd!

Wizards Presents – Magic

Fans of Magic: The Gathering also got plenty of exciting news to look forward to. Whether you’re waiting for your favorite crossover product or excited for the next year of Magic’s premier sets, this year’s Wizards Presents had something for you.

Universes Beyond

For fans of Magic’s crossovers, there are multiple Universes Beyond products on the way.

First, we received more news on the upcoming Lord of the Rings set: Tales of Middle-Earth. As we already knew, this is a modern-legal set which is fully draftable, and it will be released in Q3 2022. There will also be a corresponding Alchemy set on MTG Arena releasing at the same time.

We also saw a new card treatment: borderless scene cards! When placed in a grid, these cards create epic visual representations of famous scenes from the LoR trilogy, with some using up to 18 cards.

We already knew that four Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks were on the way, but we learned more details about their release. They will be available on Oct. 7th, and there will be a Collectors Edition for each deck. Every card in the Collectors Edition decks will have a new foil treatment called Surge Foil.

The four decks will be based around each of the following factions:

  • The Imperium of Man
  • The Forces of Chaos
  • The Undying Necrons
  • The Tyranids

Each faction’s deck will play true to their strategy in 40K itself.

WOTC also revealed their newest addition to the Universes Beyond lineup: Doctor Who! We didn’t learn much about this product, but we do know that there will be four Commander decks featuring multiple doctors and events from throughout the series’ long history.

Magic 30

Magic 30 is the return of large-scale, in-person events for MTG. It will take place in Las Vegas from Oct. 28th-30th, and it will host this year’s World Championship. There will be plenty of other side events, including cosplay competitions, and a Modern tournament in which the top 8 will compete in a Beta draft!

Secret Lair

Of course, there are plenty of new Secret Lair drops on the horizon. The August super drop will happen shortly, and a collaboration with Brain Dead is also in the future.

Lastly, a drop containing one card from every year of MTG will be available this December.

Dominaria Remastered

WOTC also announced a new product: Dominaria Remastered. This product was recently leaked on Amazon with the release date of January 13th, 2023. That information seems to be accurate, as it will be a draftable set with cards from over 27 sets that took place on Dominaria, with the release window of early 2023.

Upcoming Releases

Perhaps the most exciting piece of news for Magic fans was the reveal of next year’s premier sets! Not only did we get our first sneak peek at the rest of the Phyrexian story arc, but we also got to see what new adventures lie beyond.

    • An epilogue of sorts to tie up loose ends and explore the future of the multiverse.
  • Wilds of Eldraine
    • Fall 2023
    • This set will move away from the kingdoms and courts and into the plane’s fairy tale wilderness.
