The Brothers’ War Prerelease: Everything You Need to Know

For the second set in a row, Magic: the Gathering is shaking up the way players experience prerelease events. There will be a big difference in available products, and players will be able to get their hands on the full set sooner than ever! In this article, I’ll go over everything you need to know about The Brothers’ War prerelease.

The Brothers’ War Prerelease events start Friday, November 11th, 2022, and carry on until the set’s official release on November 18th.

If you’re interested in attending a prerelease and want to know exactly what you’re in store for, this is the article for you. Let’s jump right in!

What Is Prerelease?

Prerelease is a special MTG event hosted by local game stores all across the globe. Prerelease takes place a week before a set’s official release and gives players early access to all of the new cards. Players open packs, build decks and test out the new set in a friendly tournament setting.

You can also participate in an official “home Prerelease event”. In these events, players open bundles and build decks at home, and compete against each other via webcam.

New Prerelease Changes and Updates

As I hinted at above, Wizards of the Coast announced that they’re making a few changes to the prerelease format starting with The Brother’s War. For starters, players will be able to buy all available products for the set at prerelease, immediately, and in any quantity!

That’s everything: Set Boosters, Draft Boosters, Collector’s Boosters, Bundles, Commander Decks, Jumpstart Boosters, everything! No more having to curb your excitement following an amazing prerelease. Now, you can get whatever you want, and however much of it you want, at the very first event.

In another small change, Wizards also announced that the paper prerelease will come before the digital release. This means that if you want to play with the cards as soon as possible, you’ll need to get into a local game store in person.

What is Jumpstart Prerelease?

Jumpstart boosters are special packs that contain 20 Magic cards. These packs are specifically designed to make it easy for newer players to get in on the action. At a Jumpstart prerelease, players open and build their decks from Jumpstart booster packs instead of the usual prerelease bundles. In most cases this means that players are given 3 jumpstart packs which they open, choose two, combine them together and play! Everything you need is included, even the lands.

There will, however, still be regular prerelease events as well. Stores may choose to combine both events together or host the events separately.

I started playing Magic in 2015 after impulsively buying a fat-pack of Khans of Tarkir. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with the game, and it's been a big part of my life ever since. Nowadays, I play moslty Modern, Commander, and Limited, but also enjoy keeping up with Standard. Whatever the format, I always find a way to brew up janky decks, convince myself they're great, get proven wrong, and love every second of it.
