Magic: The Gathering’s “Universes Beyond” series has melded the world of MTG with that of The Walking Dead, Street Fighter, and Stranger Things. On October 7th it ventured into the fantasy world of the table-top RPG, Warhammer 40,000. The collaboration brought four ready-to-play commander decks and three Secret Lair Drops. Today it is the precons we will focus on.
Here’s a look at the names and color identities. They are, Forces of the Imperium (white-blue-black), Tyranid Swarm (green-blue-red), The Ruinous Powers (blue-black-red), and Necron Dynasties (mono-black).
Bringing two popular games together will undoubtedly attract numerous new players to the format of EDH and MTG in general. Furthermore, these decks bring something we’ve never seen before. So, let’s go over some more in-depth info – Including the exciting new “Collector Edition” Commander Precons.
What Are Collector’s Edition Commander Precons?
This crossover brings with it a new and exciting product called “Collector’s Edition” precons. While the card content is the same, the Collector’s Edition comes with all 100 cards in foil, with a new “surge foil” finish. Each of the four decks is available in regular and collector versions.
Foiled commander decks have always been an avenue of personalization that certain players enjoy. These Collector Edition precons are sure to get more players into playing flashy eye-catching EDH decks.

The Ruinous Powers
Colors:
Blue, Black, Red
Primary Commander:
Secondary Commander:
Theme:
Regardless of which commander you choose to pilot “The Ruinous Powers” one thing is for sure; You’ll be throwing damage at anything that lives. And yes, that includes yourself. But rest assured, the greater the damage dealt the more you stand to gain.
You’ll be drawing cards and paying life or dealing damage equal to your demon ranks to whatever you please. Or turning the damage you’ve dealt to others into resources by cascading into more and more spells to help you seize power and bleed your enemies dry.
- Demons
- Burn
- Cascade
Deck List:
Tyranid Swarm
Colors:
Green, Blue, Red
Primary Commander:
Secondary Commander:
Theme:
You don’t have to have the biggest threats to start with… Because you’ve got “The Swarm.” And what does the swarm do? It grows and it doesn’t stop. The primary commander here gets two +1/+1 counters for each time you’ve cast it from the command zone.
Given the 5/5 body he comes with, this adds up quickly. Next, if you’re going to be throwing counters on all of your small creatures why not draw a card when they have served their purpose? That’s exactly what Xenos cunning allows you to do.
The secondary commander also cares about counters but instead of cards it ramps you into large x spells and lets you copy them. Regardless of which commander you choose even your smallest threats will prove lethal.
- +1/+1 counters
- x spells
- Creature sacrifice

Forces of the Imperium
Colors:
White, Blue, Black
Primary Commander:
Secondary Commander:
Theme:
Sometimes force is the only way to get the right outcome. With either of the Forces of the Imperium commanders, that’s exactly what you’ll do; Pump out troops and bolster their stats. While the deck is a showcase of brawn, that doesn’t mean it lacks brains.
Abilities like “hunt for heresy” and “master tactician” show some finesse in dealing with opposing creatures and turning your bodies into new cards respectively. So, grab Forces of the Imperium, come out swinging, and lay down the law.
- Tokens
- Aggro
Deck List:
Necron Dynasties
Colors:
Black
Primary Commander:
Secondary Commander:
Theme:
Necron Dynasties care about two things – First, the graveyard, and second, artifacts. With either of these momo-black commanders, you’ll want to be reanimating things and using that to generate value.
With that said, one brings your discarded machines (artifacts and vehicles) or minions (creatures) back to your hand each time it attacks. The other one produces a few bodies whenever you reanimate something and pumps them up. Either way, the deck is “mono-black” through and through and very fitting for the Necron Dynasties.
- Artifacts
- Unearth
- Reanimation
